Principal’s Daughter in Vogue: The Art of Fall Layers & Cozy Dreams
This October, Vogue featured our bedding in its story,
“Simple Steps to a Perfectly Made Bed” — a guide celebrating the textures, tones, and rituals that define a beautifully layered bed.
At Principal’s Daughter, this philosophy is at the heart of everything we make.
Our Italian-woven linens, hand-finished details, and tonal palettes turn the everyday act of making the bed into a moment of beauty and calm.
The Season to Layer
As Vogue notes,
“If ever there was a season that invites more time spent in bed, it is fall … there’s nothing quite like knowing there’s a warm, welcoming bed awaiting you at home.”
Fall asks for warmth and dimension — a bed that looks lived-in and feels intentional.
That’s why we design heirloom-quality pieces that invite layering: crisp percale sheets, sculptural quilts, and soft throws that age beautifully.
The Fall Aesthetic, Refined
Autumn’s shorter days and cooler nights turn your bed into a retreat.
Layering is less about perfection and more about intention: quiet colors, natural fibers, subtle texture shifts. Our palette — soft ivory, muted camel, and rich jewel tones — captures the calm elegance Vogue’s editors describe.
“Too many decorative elements can make a bed fussy and too staged.”
We couldn’t agree more. Our philosophy: let the materials speak, and the design will feel effortless.
Craftsmanship That Lasts Beyond the Season
Each Principal’s Daughter piece is made in Italy with traceable fibers and a sustainable supply chain.
The result? Bedding that feels luxurious today and heirloom-worthy tomorrow.
When Vogue celebrates thoughtful layering and lived-in beauty, it’s a mirror of what we’ve believed since day one — that true luxury lies in how a piece feels, not just how it looks.
How to Recreate the PD Look (Step by Step)
The vibe: quietly luxurious, tactile, and effortless—layers of bouclé, linen, and wool that feel inviting, not fussy.
1) Build a flawless base
Start with a fitted sheet you love (linen or percale both work). Add a thin, breathable mattress protector so the surface is ultra-smooth before styling.
2) Lay your foundation cover
Instead of jumping straight to a bulky duvet, set the foundation with a light bedcover or coverlet. Smooth it flat and tuck the foot and sides for crisp lines. Skipping the duvet (or using it sparingly) is a designer-approved shortcut to a neater, more refined bed.
PD pick: Double Linen Bedcover — it gives drape and structure without bulk.

3) Add the signature PD texture
Float a Bouclé Bedcover on top for depth and quiet drama. Let it overhang evenly on both sides so the loops catch light and add dimension.
Featured by Moda Operandi for introducing “a new standard of enduring elegance and environmental consciousness to the world of luxury bedding.”
Palette notes: Ivory, Taupe, Camel for tone-on-tone calm; Fuchsia for a single, saturated pop that still reads refined.
Also spotlighted by The Cool Hour for its sculptural texture and heirloom quality.
4) Create the “gallery fold”
At the head of the bed, fold the top 12–18" of your Linen Bedcover back over itself to frame the pillows.
This minimalist fold keeps the look serene and hotel-clean — a designer trick highlighted by Architectural Digest.
5) Use the PD pillow formula
-
2 sleeping pillows (two stacked per side) for comfort and height
-
2 bouclé shams (king or euro, stood upright) for texture
OR
-
1 long lumbar or 1–2 small accents (optional) to finish (Holiday 2025)
Designers recommend restraint here—edited pillows look chic and real-life usable.
PD pick: Bouclé Shams (King/Queen) in Ivory, Taupe, Camel, or Gray to echo the top layer.
6) Layer warmth with intention
If it’s cool out, slip a thin quilt or eiderdown between your base cover and the bouclé, keeping layers flat and breathable instead of puffy.
This keeps the silhouette tailored while adding real warmth.
7) Add a single throw for movement
Finish with one throw casually draped across the lower third or the corner farthest from the door. You want a bit of asymmetry and “air” around it—never a pile.
PD pick: Classic Bouclé Throw to mirror the bedcover texture in a slightly different scale.
8) Keep the color story tight
Choose 2–3 tones max (e.g., Ivory + Camel + Taupe).
If you’re using Fuchsia, let it be the star—keep the rest neutral so the eye rests.
9) Final finesse (takes 60 seconds)
-
“Waterfall” the overhang so it falls straight and clean.
-
Give the bouclé a light shake so loops look plush but not messy.
-
Align pillow edges; pinch the front corners of shams once to sharpen them.
-
Step back and remove one item if anything feels crowded (designer rule of thumb).
10) Daily reset (under 2 minutes)
In the morning, smooth the top layer with the back of your hands, plump the two front shams, and square the throw.
The less you touch, the more effortless it looks—exactly what designers recommend.
