What does luxury mean in the context of home decor today, and do you feel that the democratization of luxury has affected the quality and ubiquity in the interior industry, just as it has the fashion industry?
In my opinion, luxury home decor today means impeccable craftsmanship. I also think there’s a luxury to local handmade goods since so much of what we have around us today is imported and mass produced. I do think this democratization of luxury has impacted the quality and uniqueness of home decor. Far too many vendors hop on trends rather than focusing on creativity and innovation.
What are some of the rarest or most coveted materials you’ve worked with in your designs?
These days I’m working on mainly hospitality design projects where budgets are more limited, however previously in high end residential we used unique materials or techniques like marquetry, horsehair, and parchment for furniture.
What’s your advice for someone looking to bring luxury into their home without a complete redesign?
Lighting makes a massive difference in a space. Make sure to use bulbs that are 2700K, it’ll bring out a warmer and more welcoming color temperature in a room. Also ensure you have a mix of low level lighting (table lamps and floor lamps) rather than all overhead lighting. I also love experimenting with textiles. Principal’s Daughter’s bouclé decor pillows and throws are a great way to add a luxe touch to a home.
Who or what are your major design influences?
I studied Art History for my BA – so I’m usually influenced by the past when it comes to design. I also love going to museums and discovering fine arts in general.
Can you share an emerging trend that you’re excited about and think could be the next big thing in the industry?
We’re definitely moving away from the all white or beige home trends. There’s an influx of maximalism incorporating bold colors and patterns. I still love a neutral interior and think those will always be around, but I’d recommend incorporating a variety of textures and contrast within the neutrals so the space doesn’t feel cold. Kelly Wearstler’s Proper Hotel in Santa Monica is a great example of this.
What are your non-negotiables for achieving maximal comfort in the bedroom?
Blackout blinds. Plush and beautiful pillows and throws. Dimmable bedside lighting.
What role do you predict AI will have in interior design in the next 5 years?
I think it will be a great tool to expedite the design process but I don’t think it would replace interior designers entirely.
Can you describe your design philosophy and how it influences your work?
I personally love mixing old and new. Too much of one thing and you either end up looking like an antique shop or a branded showroom. Mixing both and you have something special. I also strongly believe that every design decision and item in a space need to have a reasoning behind why it’s there and makes sense. Choosing things just because they’re trendy or pretty won’t create longevity in the design.
Are you a morning person or an evening person? What are some of your favorite routines and rituals?
I’m a morning person for sure, I wake up with a lot of energy and usually go straight to my desk after my tea and breakfast (I work from home). However I’m more of a fan of the evenings and enjoy rituals like long baths and indulging in a mild step skincare routine. I also don’t mind watching trash reality TV to disconnect after work haha.
How does your taste in interiors affect your eye for fashion?
I find it hard to really dig into fashion the way you can with interiors. Fashion moves much faster – there are new trends and brands popping up constantly. As a result I lean more neutral and classic in fashion.
Do you prefer to host an event or to be hosted?
I love the idea of being a host but the reality is that I find it hard to multitask while being social – so I’m much better off being a guest!
If you had to wear one outfit for the rest of your life, what would it be?
What a tricky question. Probably a wrap dress in a neutral color – they’re comfortable and don’t seem to go out of style!
What are your favorite restaurant spots for a casual meal and a night out?
My husband is Persian and he introduced me to exploring middle eastern restaurants! We recently went to Rumi’s Kitchen here in Houston. The food was delicious and the place had a great atmosphere.
